Todays mortgage payers are living in very lucky times and if rates go up the whingeing will be rife.

"Rates were 15% for some of the years I paid mine".

My Aunt had a breakdown.

No, don't expect we will see rates anywhere near 15%.

But just expect the whingeging and crisis spewed out if they go up just a couple of points. The media will get excited even for a half percent rise.

Mortgage payers have had it rosy for several years.

My parents bought their house in the 80s

It is now worth ten times more than what they paid for it.

Inflation/wages has not gone up 10 times that amount in the same period.

People then wonder how they could afford 15% interest rates on their mortgage back in the 80s?

Not rocket science.

Re: Interest rates look like theyre heading up..
This is because loads have gone out and borrowed, loaned on their credit cards, loans. Need to slow borrowing down. History tells us that small increases don't work and end up with larger increases which just pulls the rug from under everyone's feet, collapses the economy like a pack of cards. Higher single figure rates will do a similar job as 15% rates did in the 90s as many are much more indebted. Even Jim Rogers say's we are going to catch a cold.

Jim Rogers believes the "worst [financial] crash in our lifetime" will happen this year or next, pointing to rising debt levels in the US and China. everyone should be "very worried" as the debt problem in 2008 was "nothing" compared to the current global economic backdrop.

Trev, I get the feeling the two things intertwine somewhat?

Interest rates might have been terrible, but he probably paid about £4.80 for his gaff.

Swings and roundabouts innit.

When you was getting interest rates of 15% inflation was probably rising just as fast.

never will we see such interest rates again. House prices are so expensive now that unless we see some serious inflation and wage rises interest rates wont be going up considerably anytime soon. Half the population with a mortgage would go bankrupt!
